More than 1.4 million checks are forged every day, causing $27.3 million in daily losses to American businesses. According to the National Check Fraud Center, fraud due to bad checks and counterfeiting are among the fastest-growing problems affecting the nation’s financial system, producing estimated annual losses of $10 billion and continuing to rise at an alarming rate annually.
Businesses accepting negotiable instruments such as checks, money orders, or warrants need clerks, tellers and cashiers who are able to tell whether these personal and business checks and other transaction documents are genuine or fake. In addition to being familiar with check anatomy, they need to also be able to recognize the various printing processes. Combined with the additional information and the checklists presented in this book, your staff will be better prepared to recognize fraudulent traveler's, cashier's and personal checks, as well as bogus money orders.
Since these latter negotiable items are tendered less frequently than a personal or business check, your clerks and cashiers have less experience in negotiating them. Further, today’s computer printers perform so well that counterfeited negotiable documents can be very difficult to spot.
