The job of a handwriting expert is primarily in determining whether handwriting is authentic or forged, and in identifying or eliminating the person who wrote a particular writing. As a member of this profession, I examine and identify signatures, handwriting, hand printing, initials, and numbers on all types of documents, such as:
    • Forged, counterfeited and altered documents
    • Wills; Deeds; Legal Contracts; Checks
    • Medical Records (IN MEDICAL MALPRACTICE CASES)
    • Insurance Records
    • Court Documents
    • Typewritten and Computer Printed Documents
    • Photocopied Documents
    • Latent impressions on documents
    • Charred Documents
Handwriting Experts are also called "Questioned Document Examiners", or "Forensic Document Analysts". The word "forensic" just means "the application of science to law". So in this case, handwriting experts develop evidence that can be used in both civil and in criminal courts. In government forensic laboratories, the forensic document handwriting experts work side by side with the finger print experts cooperating to determine who has handled or written on a document.

However, other issues are also explored by the handwriting examiners. Through forensic analysis using specialized equipment, they may also determine that different pens were used to write on a document or what printing methods were employed to create the basic form of the document such as the imprinted graphics and text as are seen on personal and business checks. These examinations can help determine whether or not a document was counterfeited.
